Depth-direction analysis of nickel depletion in a Ni–gadolinia-doped ceria hydrogen electrode after steam electrolysis operation

چکیده

We have examined the initial-stage degradation of a Ni–gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) cermet hydrogen electrode prepared on GDC buffer layer stabilized-zirconia electrolyte supported cell during steam electrolysis operation at 800 °C. With use an air reference electrode, IR-free potential E and ohmic resistance side (RH2-side) were recorded. After −1.0 A cm−2 for 211 h, RH2-side increased appreciably, by 36 %, while value was nearly unchanged. It found via depth-direction analysis with focused ion beam-scanning microscopy that remaining percentage Ni decreased to ca. 60 % in between 1 3 µm from top layer, followed further decrease 42 0.5 µm. Since this suggests significant cathodic polarization within thin reaction zone, enlargement together stabilization contacting GDC, could be essential mitigate such degradation.

Is Steam an Oxidant or a Reductant for Nickel/Doped‐Ceria Cermets?

Nickel/doped-ceria composites are promising electrocatalysts for solid-oxide fuel and electrolysis cells. Very often steam is present in the feedstock of the cells, frequently mixed with other gases, such as hydrogen or CO2 . An increase in the steam concentration in the feed mixture is considered accountable for the electrode oxidation and the deactivation of the device. However, direct experi...

Hydrogen Production via CH4 and CO Assisted Steam Electrolysis

Porous composite anodes consisting of a yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) backbone that was impregnated with CeO2 and various amounts of metallic components including Cu, Co and Pd were fabricated. The performance of these anodes was then tested in a solid oxide water electrolysis cell under conditions where the anode was exposed to the reducing gasses H2, CH4 and CO. The reducing gasses were us...

Redox-reversible niobium-doped strontium titanate decorated with in situ grown nickel nanocatalyst for high-temperature direct steam electrolysis.

Composite cathodes based on Sr0.94Ti0.9Nb0.1O3 (STNO) can be utilized for direct steam electrolysis; however, the insufficient electrocatalytic activity limits electrode performance and current efficiency. In this work, redox-reversible (Sr0.94)0.9(Ti0.9Nb0.1)0.9Ni0.1O3 (STNNO) with A-site deficiency and B-site excess has been designed as a cathode material in an oxide-ion-conducting solid oxid...

Reduction Dynamics of Doped Ceria, Nickel Oxide, and Cermet Composites Probed Using In Situ Raman Spectroscopy

The redox properties of gadolinium doped ceria (CGO) and nickel oxide (NiO) composite cermets underpin the operation of solid oxide electrochemical cells. Although these systems have been widely studied, a full comprehension of the reaction dynamics at the interface of these materials is lacking. Here, in situ Raman spectroscopic monitoring of the redox cycle is used to investigate the interpla...
